The initiative will deploy teams comprising law students and practicing lawyers who will travel on two-wheelers — motorcycles, scooters, and bicycles — into the interiors of India. This approach allows the teams to navigate rural terrains and reach communities that traditional legal aid services might overlook.
Lawyers on Wheels actively encourages participation from law students across the country. The program calls for student volunteers from law colleges and institutions willing to partner with The Chamber Practice of Solicitor Gajanan Khergamker.
Training sessions for selected volunteers will take place in Mumbai before the field operations commence. These programs will cover essential topics, including:
- An overview of key legal principles, rights, and laws relevant to rural and tribal communities
- Practical skills for interacting with clients, conducting legal research, and preparing documentation
- Understanding the socio-cultural dynamics of rural communities to ensure effective communication and service delivery
- Simulated interactions that help prepare volunteers for real-life situations they may encounter in the field
The initiative is designed for long-term impact, with the goal of establishing a network of resident volunteers who will continue to provide legal aid across Maharashtra, Goa, Daman, and Gujarat. By fostering ongoing partnerships with law colleges, the initiative aims to create a sustained workforce of passionate individuals committed to legal service in under-served areas.
